For more information, please visit about.springernature.com and follow @SpringerNature About the Role The goal of the Publishing Performance and Intelligence Group (PP&I) is to help deliver next-generation digital publishing at Springer Nature and, as a result, grow the number of published articles, especially in open access (OA). Working closely with the Journals Group, Production, IT, Marketing, and Customer Service, PP&I supports increasing the number of transfers of articles between journals, commissioning new collections, enforcing research integrity, strengthening editor engagement, and delivering enhancements to the end-to-end journal publishing process. Springer Nature's Indexing team, as part of the Editorial Excellence within PP&I, ensures the leading research reaches the widest and most relevant audiences across the world through premier abstracting & indexing services. These services include PubMed from the US National Library of Medicine and Clarivate's Web of Science (which also assigns Journal Impact Factors) and remain critical as Springer Nature continues to lead the transition to open access research publishing. Supervised by the Head of Indexing, the Indexing Manager is a core member of the Indexing team and a crucial point of contact for internal and external editorial stakeholders. The Indexing Manager will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing strategic relationships with key indexing services and delivering indexing projects across the Research Publishing Business Unit to bring efficiency and effectiveness in workflow-related aspects of the business. The Indexing Manager will also be responsible for partnering with external indexing services to monitor and track changing requirements and recommend workflow improvements for maximum indexing success. Roles Responsibilities: Strategy Contributes to a shared vision and strategy for Indexing Services at Springer Nature with closely associated teams (e.g., the Publishing teams, Production teams, DDS, QA, Third Party Licensing, Rights, and Permissions, PP&I, and Research Integrity) as well as teams across Springer Nature Serves as primary contact and subject matter expert and represents the interests of Springer Nature through regular, in-depth meetings with external indexing services, while at the same time helping to grow and sustain strong business relationships Keeps track of the changing indexing requirements and landscape with the latest developments in indexing services Understands various indexing systems/tools developed internally to further enhance those systems for better performance by suggesting improvements and working closely with the Manager, Indexing Data Management, and the SN Emerging Technology and Data Technology teams
Management Organizes work effectively within a clear management structure, works collaboratively with colleagues, and fosters a culture of diversity and teamwork Works collaboratively with the Indexing team on KPIs, tracking, and reporting on progress every month
Operations and Process Improvement Manages workflows, meetings, and creates documentation and communications to ensure the indexing processes are sufficiently well-organized, understood, transparent, and open Builds close working relationships with stakeholders from other SN teams that control and/or develop the processes and systems the Indexing team relies on Works with internal teams (such as the SN Technology, PP&I, Publishing Solutions, Publishing, and Production) to help conceptualize, maintain, and enhance indexing-related tools and projects Identifies changing as well as emerging trends of the indexing ecosystems specifically and research publishing generally, in collaboration with internal and external teams Contributes to a culture of continuous improvement in the Indexing team. Working to propose ways of improving (or building upon) existing processes, contributing to implementation, and identifying new ways of supporting indexing initiatives.
Key Relationships Reports to the Head of Indexing Liaises with internal stakeholders such as Publishing, Production Technology, PP&I teams, and external stakeholders such as journal editorial teams and key indexing services such as Clarivate, Elsevier, PubMed, and DOAJ etc. Where appropriate, communicate with internal Information Technology teams to suggest improvements or deliver scalable processes for indexing tools and systems.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications Experience Demonstrated success in building consensus from colleagues, stakeholders, and external partners. Experience working in a multicultural environment, collaborating with diverse teams, and establishing connections with stakeholders from different backgrounds and regions. In-depth experience in research and scholarly publishing, indexing services, and business issues related to research integrity and publishing ethics. Broad knowledge of related functions and disciplines within research publishing and their contributions to strategy, particularly but not limited to editorial, publishing, and operations teams. Evidence of effectiveness in identifying risks and root causes of problems, solving complex problems, and using knowledge and data to make informed recommendations. Broad understanding of all our core brand values, e.g., Springer, Nature, Fully Open Access Brand (FOAB), Discover, Cureus, and other key brands across the Research Publishing business. Experience in contributing to activities aimed at workflow implementation, improvement, or automation and/or to data quality initiatives. Experience with best practice customer service and project coordination/management in previous roles. Willingness, flexibility, creativity, and ambition to improve processes and workflows.
Skills Demonstrate a highly analytical and logical approach and be able to articulate complex concepts in a clear, concise, and unambiguous manner. Demonstrated experience in working with internal data systems for completeness and accuracy. Able to inspire confidence and to maintain a professional attitude in all interactions with colleagues and external partners. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of colleagues and stakeholders - internally within the company, as well as with external partners and stakeholders. Strong time-management, organisational skills, and understanding of prioritization Demonstrated experience in searching various databases such as Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, EI Compendex, and Dimensions (SN Insights) Punctuality and reliability are required.

The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country. US Annualized Base Salary Range: $70,000 - $80,000.
